The Prisoner of Acre

Murray Bailey

Publication date: 23/2/24

Publisher: Three Daggers

SYNOPSIS

Ash Carter returns to Israel on what should be a straightforward mission except for one small detail. Why did Alfred Duffy
go AWOL from the British Army, go to Israel and then hand himself in at Acre Prison.

The mystery deepens when Carter finds that Duffy escaped just as he arrived.

The hunt begins but as the mystery unravels towards an exciting climax, it becomes unclear who is the hunter and who the hunted.

MY REVIEW

Murray does it again with another fast paced, thrilling, tension packed, immersive, atmospheric read! Such is the quality of the writing, I was immediately dropped right in the middle of the action, and could almost feel the sun on my back and the dry heat.

Set in 1949 Ash Carter, Special Investigator for the Military Police, is sent to Acre Prison in the newly formed state of Israel on what should be a simple task to collect Duffy, an army deserter, and jump on the evening boat home. Duffy went AWOL from Cyprus and then strangely handed himself in to Acre Prison where he is being held until Carter arrives. Unfortunately Carter arrives to find Duffy has escaped along with his Arab cell mate. Why would he hand himself in just to escape?

Carter is a talented tracker, like a dog with a bone, so sets out to find Carter. Hated by both the Jews and the Arabs after the British pulled out and left Israel still at war, Carter has his work cut out travelling through the dangerous landscape.

There is some sort of smuggling operation in the area which adds another layer of danger for Carter’s investigation.

Carter finds himself in a number of life threatening situations, but he always remains calm.

There is a touch of a love interest for Carter, so all is not doom and gloom!

I couldn’t put it down as the action reached a terrifying and unpredictable climax. Then I couldn’t get to sleep as my mind was still racing! Must remember in future not to read Murray’s books at bedtime.

As well as the tension packed, adrenaline fuelled storyline, Murray incorporates plenty of historical facts about the situation in the Near East at this time.

This is the fourth book in the Ash Carter Near East series. Easily reads as a stand alone but I would recommend reading the rest of the series. You will want to after reading this one.

The Vanitas & Other Tales of Art and Obsession

Jake Kendall

Publication Dates: UK: 22/2/24

US: September 2024

Publisher: Neem Tree Press

SYNOPSIS

Spanning 300 years of art history and weaving art styles including Cubism, Surrealism, and the Baroque into his prose, Jake Kendall’s collection tells the stories of those with an obsession for creation – artists who sacrifice friendships, careers, romance, and even their own happiness in pursuit of a vision.

How far would you go for the sake of art?

In these 8 illustrated short stories, Monet, Van Gogh, Géricault and others navigate the boundary between art and experience through masterfully written prose that reflects each artist’s style. The collection culminates with “The Vanitas”, where Sandro Signorelli’s philosophy that a lifetime of faith and toil shall receive its just reward is challenged by the emergence of a new artist. Across town, Michelangelo Merisi is making seismic waves. The city of Rome cannot help but be captivated by this explosive eruption of talent, swagger, seduction, and violence, while Sandro’s life is plunged into crisis by a rival who does not even know his name.

MY REVIEW

Oh I do like to read something a bit different and this has ticked that box with a satisfyingly big tick. An unusually written book of two halves. First half is a superb collection of 7 short stories, and the second half is one much longer story, just as enjoyable and brilliantly written..

There is a wonderful drawing at the beginning of each story and the story is based around that drawing. Each story revolves around artists and obsessions, personal struggles and achievements, some to the detriment of relationships, friends and family, and some to the artist themselves.

In ‘Medusa’ we meet a painter so determined to paint a raft full of people from a shipwreck he fills his studio with wood and men to set the scene for him to paint. We hear from first hand experience how horrific that experience at sea was.

In ‘Composition’ we meet a young man who is just to say surviving on his paltry income working a summer job when he is befriended by a famous artist and welcomed into her home.

The longer story ‘The Vanitas’ follows Sandro, a painter from Rome who is desperately trying to sell his new painting but struggling as there is a new painter in town. We follow Sandro as he strives to better his work at the same time as teaching a younger boy and trying to provide for his family.

An absolutely fantastic book I thoroughly enjoyed and I hope to read a lot more from this talented author.

Huge thanks to Dave at The Write Reads for inviting me onto the blog tour and introducing me to this author’s work.

To Cage a God

Elizabeth May

Publication Date: 20/2/24

Publisher: Daphne Press

SYNOPSIS

Join the rebellion to burn down a cruel tyrant in this heartracing new fantasy duology, perfect for fans of Shadow and Bone and The Wolf and the Woodsman.

To cage a god is divine. To be divine is to rule. To rule is to destroy.

Using ancient secrets, Galina and Sera’s mother grafted gods into their bones. Bound to brutal deities and granted forbidden power no commoner has held in a thousand years, the sisters have been raised as living weapons. Now, the time has come for them to overthrow an empire―no matter the cost.

With their mother gone and their country on the brink of war, it falls to the sisters to take the helm of the rebellion and end the cruel reign of a royal family possessed by destructive gods. Because when the ruling alurea invade, they conquer with fire and blood. And when they clash, common folk burn.

Forced into a desperate plan, Sera reunites with her estranged lover who now leads the rebellion, while Galina infiltrates the palace. In this world of deception and danger, her only refuge is an isolated princess whose whip-smart tongue and sharp gaze threaten to uncover Galina’s secret. Torn between desire and duty, Galina must make a choice: work together to expose the lies of the empire―or bring it all down.

MY REVIEW

An immersive fantasy with a large serving of romance and spice.

The main characters, Sera and Galina, are sisters, who’s mother experimented on them until she managed to imprison gods in their bodies. This is something which has not been achieved for thousands of years, nor is a commoner allowed to have this power . Unfortunately, her mother made a mistake and Sera has the wrong God caged inside her and it loathes her, only coming to her aid if she offers it her blood.

What I enjoyed most was getting to know the two very strong female leads, both are superb characters. Their very different romances bubble below the surface and then explode towards the end of the book with plenty of graphic detail.

The Empress is a character you just love to hate. Think Maleficent but much more evil and you’ll not be far off.

This is book one in a duology and I’ll be reading book two to see what happens to the sisters and their gods.

Adiel and The Führer

Elyse Hoffman

Book Info

Genre: Historical Fiction, German historical fiction

Length: 342 pages

Published: 20 April 2024

SYNOPSIS

Adiel Goldstein has a good life. Despite the anti-Semitism he faces as a German Jew, he has everything he wants. A dream job as an art professor, good friends, a loving father, and a precious nine-year-old daughter, Kaia. But his life is about to be upended. An old comrade from his time fighting in the Great War is gaining power: a man named Hitler. Adiel’s father insists that they need to leave the country before Hitler becomes the leader of Germany.

Adiel and his family plan to move to America, but before they can even pack their bags, he and Kaia make a shocking discovery. Adiel’s father, Natan Goldstein, is from the future. A Holocaust survivor who lost his family to unspeakable tragedy, Natan was given the chance to go back in time and take the life of Adolf Hitler. But when he failed to kill the future Führer, he devoted himself to his new family and awaited the inevitable.

Natan can’t face the Holocaust again, but Adiel’s unique connection to Hitler means he might be able to succeed where his father failed. Adiel now has a choice: escape as planned and let history repeat itself, or sacrifice everything to stop the Holocaust before it can begin.

Award winning author Elyse Hoffman has crafted a thought-provoking and daring work of historical fiction which will tug at your heartstrings.

MY REVIEW

A thought provoking alternate history is explored in this book which tugged at my heart strings!

If you had the chance to travel back in time, where would you go and what would you do? When holocaust survivors Becca and Natan find themselves in this situation they decide to travel back in time and kill baby Hitler. There will be no war. No death camps. Their friends and family will not have been murdered. The thing is, it is a one way journey and they must live their lives going forward in this alternate timeline.

The author looks at nature v nurture and the affect upbringing has on a child when they are an adult.

The star of the book for me was little Kaia who was forever positive and happy, no matter what life threw at her. Following the premise of a Charlie Chaplin film she comes up with a crazy solution to get to the ‘second Hitler’. Operation Chaplin. But it might just work!

I was absolutely sold on this book from the synopsis and I couldn’t have enjoyed it more. The writing pulled me in completely. Many of the German characters in the book are real people who were close to Hitler, and have been written as authentically as possible.

It sounds complicated, but it really isn’t when you read it. I haven’t included too much of the plot in my review so as not to ruin it.

All I can say to sum up is I highly recommend it, and I will be reading the others in this series…as well as the next one.

Huge thanks to The Write Reads for my spot on the blog tour.

SYNOPSIS

If you can’t trust your head, can you trust your heart?

If she had been found moments later, Amelia’s heart would have stopped and never recovered. Instead she was taken from the desolate beach to the nearest hospital just in time to save her life. When her sister Lexi arrives from New York, Amelia’s heart is beating, but the accident has implanted a series of false memories. These memories revolve around a man named Sam, and a perfect love story that never existed.

Determined to help her sister, Lexi enlists the help of Nick, a local vet who bears a striking resemblance to Sam. Together, Lexi and Nick recreate and photograph Amelia’s dream dates in the hopes of triggering her true memories.

But as love starts to stir between Lexi and Nick, they must navigate a complex web of emotions. How can Lexi fall for Amelia’s dream man without hurting her sister?

MY REVIEW

Lexi meets a handsome stranger on the beach who looks exactly like her sister Amelia’s drawing of her imaginary husband. Recovering from an almost fatal incident in which her heart stopped, Amelia has woken up with an irregular heartbeat and believing she is married. Lexi convinces Nick to pose for some photographs with her following the events in the ‘memories’ Amelia has created. Nick initially thinks she is crazy but soon gets to know and understand Lexi’s reasoning. Lexi has no idea she will fall in love with this stranger.

Oh my goodness I can’t remember the last book I cried so much at! For the last 20 minutes or so I could hardly read through the tears!

What an extraordinary story. Unique. Tear jerking. Laugh out loud funny. It’s a beautiful love story, actually two love stories, amongst a third and very sad story. Lots of highs and lows and my emotions don’t know what has hit them.

A story of the love which binds two sisters. Twins. Born 8 years apart through IVF. With that other worldly twins connection. They will always protect each other.

Very highly recommended.

What We Did in the Storm

Tina Baker

Publisher: Viper

SYNOPSIS

Everyone brings their secrets to the island…

On the beautiful and windswept island of Tresco, two worlds live side by side. The wealthy visitors come by helicopter to stay at their lavish time-share properties. The estate staff travel by boat, and work all hours to keep them happy, to keep the money flowing in.

But while the blue skies and savage waves make the island seem a wild paradise, under the surface the inhabitants are concealing more than they dare reveal. The truths about their marriages, their love affairs, and what they do in the darkness while their neighbours are sleeping.

As black clouds come rolling in and a storm hits the island, truths and rumours begin to tumble out, wreaking terrible damage. In the midst of the tempest, two women are attacked and one goes missing. The secrets of this fragile community can no longer be hidden if it hopes to survive. The islanders must finally reveal what they did in the storm, no matter the cost.

From the #1 bestselling author of Call Me Mummycomes a dark and luscious thriller, perfect for readers of Harriet Tyce, Amanda Jennings and Louise Candlish.

MY REVIEW

It’s an island ‘locked room’ type thriller! I was so excited to get started on this latest novel by Tina Baker.

And I’m hooked immediately! The atmosphere. The two crazy people high on the dangerous cliffs in a fierce storm. The boatman in the rough seas. Turning back to the cliff to see only one person now…

We are introduced to, and get to know quite well, a handful of characters who live on the island, as well as some who come over regularly to visit. As the characters and their relationships develop we find out some have secrets and rather dark sides they are hiding.

After the introduction, we are taken back to find out what leads up to the person disappearing. We are, of course, kept guessing as to what happened, which is not revealed until very near the end. We watch as the storyline develops, sending a few people in the direction of the cliff at the same time as the storm is brewing, and any one of them could be responsible.

The book moves slowly at the beginning as we get to know the islanders and the pace begins to pick up as the secrets start being uncovered. By the end I knew the characters well and was flying through the pages to find what had actually happened! And I do believe I actually shouted ‘noooo!’ out loud at one point.

Wow this lady knows how to write a thriller and I love her unique writing style, peppered with dark humour!

Many thanks to Angie at Viper books for sending me a stunning finished copy of the book, and for having me along on the blog tour.

The Fury

Alex Michaelides

Publication date: 1/2/24

SYNOPSIS

There were seven of us in all, trapped on the island.
One of us was a murderer . . .’

On a small private Greek island, former movie star Lana Farrar – an old friend – invites a select group of us to stay.

It’ll be hot, sunny, perfect. A chance to relax and reconnect – and maybe for a few hidden truths to come out.

Because nothing on this island is quite what it seems.

Not Lana. Not her guests.

Certainly not the murderer – furiously plotting their crime . . .

But who am I?

My name is Elliot Chase, and I’m going to tell you a story unlike any you’ve ever heard.

MY REVIEW

Wow my mind is blown!

This is one of those books you just can’t put down as you approach the ending as so much happens. And all the twisty twists! I thought I knew what was happening but every time I had it all figured out it turned on it’s head and went in another direction!

I thoroughly enjoyed being transported to a private Greek island for the latest novel by Michaelides. It is cleverly written in an interesting way from the POV of the narrator, and the reader is made to feel he is telling his story to them over a drink in the local pub. He is one of the main characters in his story. His obsession and unrequited love for Lana, a famous, married, ex-actress he befriended years before, leads him to the island and to tell the story of a murder. Which may or may not have happened. Curiouser and curiouser. He reflects on his unhappy childhood, and his relationship with a successful and wealthy older woman, and he is quite philosophical in places. One paragraph in particular was very deep and made me stop and think about our journey through life.

I enjoyed this more than The Silent Patient and now I have The Maidens on my want to read list.

Many thanks to Michael Joseph for sending me a proof copy.

Shadows in the Ashes

Christina Courtenay

SYNOPSIS

Brimming with romance, adventure and vivid historical detail, Christina Courtenay’s gripping dual-time novel travels from the present day to the fires of ancient Pompeii.
The sunlight caught her gold bracelet, sending a flash that almost blinded her. She closed her eyes, but jumped when the earth started shaking and there was an almighty boom
behind her.

Present Day
Finally escaping an abusive marriage, Caterina Rossi takes her three-year-old daughter and flees to Italy. There she’s drawn to research scientist Connor, who needs her translation help for his work on volcanology. Together they visit the ruins of Pompeii and, standing where Mount Vesuvius unleashed its fire on the city centuries before, Cat begins to see startling visions. Visions that appear
to come from the antique bracelet handed down through her family’s generations…

AD 79
Sold by his half-brother and enslaved as a gladiator in Roman Pompeii, Raedwald dreams only of surviving each fight, making the coin needed to return to his homeland and taking his revenge. That is, until he is hired to guard beautiful Aemilia. As their forbidden love grows, Raedwald’s dreams shift
like the ever more violent tremors of the earth beneath his feet.

The present starts eerily to mirror the past as Cat must fight to protect her safety, and to forge a new path from the ashes of her old life…

MY REVIEW

I have loved reading Christina’s Viking runes series, always eagerly awaiting the next, and was excited to read a new Roman themed novel.

I was particularly looking forward to reading this one, as much of it is set in and around Sorrento in Italy where I visited when I was a teenager. Like Christina, the history of the eruption of Vesuvius and the pictures of all those poor people who died had quite an effect on me.

This novel, although still set over a dual timeline, it is slightly different as there is no physical travel through time. Cat in the present snd Aemilia in the past are connected by a gold bracelet. Cat can often see the past when wearing the bracelet, and feels a strong connection to its past owner.

The two women are living strikingly similar lives. Abusive husbands. A young daughter. A new love who is a very similar character in both looks and personality in both timelines.

I couldn’t have been more immersed in the lives of Aemilia and Raedwald and Cat and Connor. I absolutely loved both timelines. The gladiator fights in the Roman times had me on the edge of my seat.

Thank you Rachel at Rachel’s Random Resources for my spot on the blog tour.

The Dog Sitter Detective Takes The Lead

Antony Johnston

Publication Date: 25/1/24

Publisher: Allison & Busby

SYNOPSIS

Gwinny Tuffel is preparing for her first acting role in a decade in the West End, but she is dog-sitting on the side to keep the wolf from the door. So, when ageing rock star Crash Double needs help with his Border Collie, she jumps at the chance. After all, looking after the charming Ace on Crash’s Little Venice houseboat shouldn’t be an onerous task. But that’s before the singer’s dead body surfaces during the annual Canal Carnival festivities.

While the police dismiss the death as an accident, Gwinny suspects murder most foul. With a medley of suspects and some far-fetched motives to make heads or tails of, it is up to Gwinny, with Ace’s on-the-ground knowledge, to make sure the killer faces the music.

MY REVIEW

With Antony’s impressive CV, it’s no wonder I thoroughly enjoyed this cosy mystery.

This is book two in the series (and I’m hoping for more!) but having not read book one – yet – I do not feel as if I have missed out. This can easily be read as a stand alone but I’m sure you’ll also want to read about Gwinny’s escapade before this one!

I loved the characters, especially Gwinny, and her side kick and potential love interest Birch who just happens to be an ex Met police officer and helps her in her investigations. But let’s make this clear – Gwinny calls the shots and sniffs out the evidence. Ace the clever border collie does his own sniffing and helps the investigation along.

Set in the real location of Little Venice in London, I enjoyed the descriptions of the house boats and the carnival event. Shame the body floating to the surface during the opening celebration put a bit of a dampener on the event!

Plenty of slapstick humour, plus a few doses of blackmail and of course a murder to solve make this a brilliantly paced page turner. I was awake until 1.30 finishing it as I just had to know how it ended!

Huge thanks to Libby at Allison & Busby for inviting me onto the publication day blog blast and for sending me a gorgeous signed finished copy of the book.

SYNOPSIS

Two decades of secrets. One shocking discovery…

When a skull is found in Lough Coyne, facial reconstruction expert Dr Carla Steele is drawn into a fourteen-year-old case – but not all cases are cold, as Carla discovers when she and DS Jack Maguire find the brutally murdered body of a local woman close to the water’s edge.

Together with Carla’s partner, criminal psychologist Grace Franciosi, Carla and Jack uncover a tragic story with very dangerous and current implications.

Since the disappearance of her best friend, Carla has dedicated her career to bringing the dead home, but this time it’s the living who are counting on her. In a race to save another woman, will they be able to stop the killer in time?

MY REVIEW

A brilliantly written murder mystery to really sink your teeth into.

What starts off as a cold case investigation into a skull found in a lough soon turns into a potential serial killer investigation; but can the skull be connected to the body of a recently murdered young woman found hanging near the lough?

Family secrets and a few twists and turns kept me turning the pages.

Some gruesome descriptions – the flies!!

Oh and I shouted at the book a few times ‘don’t do that! Have you never watched a horror film!!’

Grace and Carla make quite a formidable team both in their jobs as well as their strong personal relationship. I enjoyed getting to know them.

I would love to find out what happened to Carla’s friend Lizzy who went missing some years ago. Hopefully in the next book.

Many thanks to Laura O’Donnell at Corvus for sending me a proof copy.
